Education and Training
Requirements
To become a farrier, it
is not necessary to have grown up with horses and be
familiar with their care. While this may seem a little
unconventional, it does make the profession accessible
to a much wider range of applicants. There are four levels of
certification, beginning with Apprentice and
progressing to Master Farrier, with specialization in
therapeutic or education applications. Although the
certification indicates superior competence, currently
there are no regulations in Canada that require
an individual be certified.
An individual can gain
the necessary skills for this profession through a
Farrier Studies Program offered at various community
colleges and private schools. Courses range in length
from 15 weeks intensive to two years, which includes an
internship. They recommend that a graduate, or intern,
apprentice with an experienced farrier for between one
and five years before attempting to write a standardized
test.
During this time, an
apprentice learns valuable lessons on operating a
business, as well as skill techniques from the mentor.
Completion of a farrier program does not guarantee the
applicant will be certified, as applicants must score at
least 80% to be accredited.
Annual competitions,
clinics and seminars encourage continual upgrading and
continuing education of association members. Courses are
offered by the American Farrier’s Association, of
which the Ontario Farrier’s Association is affiliated.
Farriers also rely on
networking through professional
associations, publications
(both online and journals) and keep up-to-date with current research in
their profession.
